Roses have been the painter's favorite flower forever, caught at the exact moment they are most themselves, full and heavy and just beginning to drop a petal. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 20th century, this large oil sets a full bouquet in a green vase against a wash of blue, a length of blue cloth pooling on the table, signed in the lower corner. A bouquet like this only lasts a few days in life, which is why painters kept returning to it, holding the roses at their fullest just before they go. Sylvie hangs it on its own over a mantel or a bed, a whole summer's roses that never fade.
