Still Life Artwork

Somebody gathered a big earthenware jug, a coffee pot, and a few apples on a striped cloth and made an afternoon of painting them. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 20th century, it holds the whole group in warm ochres and coppers, signed and dated 1961 in the lower corner. By the 1960s the still life had loosened up, the careful old-master finish giving way to bolder brushwork and blockier color, which is exactly the feel of this one. Sylvie leans it in a kitchen or on a mantel, unframed, its warm colors doing the work a frame usually would.
