Rare Carpenters Restored Workbench

Every château had a workshop somewhere behind the grand rooms, and at the center of it stood an établi like this, the cabinetmaker's own bench where the estate's carpenter kept everything running. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 19th century, this one came out of a château's own workshop, its massive top scarred by a lifetime of work, a great wooden vise screwing shut at one end, and a front fitted with pigeonholes, graduated shelves, and a grilled cupboard door. The craftsmanship is the whole story, every joint cut and pegged by hand to take real force, and the back holds two deep drawers and open shelves besides, so nothing the carpenter needed was ever out of reach. Meticulously restored, it stands now as a kitchen island or a bar, a working masterpiece asked only to hold the flowers and the wine instead of the tools.
