Antique One-Of-A-Kind Wood

Not every desk was made for business, and one this size was for the small correspondence of a household, the letters and lists and notes. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 19th century, it is a Louis XIII-style writing table, its bare wood stripped pale, with a single drawer beneath the top and turned legs joined low by a heavy turned stretcher. The turned legs and the low stretcher are pure Louis XIII, a look from the early 1600s that France went back to again and again, and the stretcher did real work, bracing the legs and giving your feet somewhere to rest off a cold floor. Sylvie puts it under a window as a writing desk, a chair pulled up with a stack of paper and a good pen.

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The legs have been repaired. The wood has been sanded back to a raw, unfinished wood, and the top has a crack from years of use.
