Alps Chair - I

Austria, 20th Century

$395

In an Alpine kitchen a chair like this got pulled out and shoved back a thousand times a day, built solid enough to take a century of it. Found in Le Mans and dating to the early 20th century, it has a solid dished seat on four splayed legs, with a tall rounded back pierced by a trefoil cut-out at the center, a clover of three round lobes. That opening was cut to double as a handle, a place to grab and lift the chair, and it happens to be the one bit of decoration the maker allowed himself. Sylvie sets one at a small writing desk, its shaped back rising behind you as you sit.
