French Step Stool

Every kitchen had a little stool for the high shelf, the top of the cupboard, the jar kept just out of reach. Found in Normandy and dating to the 20th century, it is small and low, a rectangular top on two shaped board legs joined by a stretcher, the joints pegged and wedged so it holds without a nail. The square ends showing on the top are the leg tenons driven all the way through, locked tight by the wedge in the stretcher, the old way of building a stool to take a lifetime of being stood on. Sylvie keeps it in the kitchen for reaching the high shelf, or tucks it by an armchair as a footrest.
