Tapestry - Normandie

France, 20th Century

$1,395

Under a canopy of old trees a whole afternoon unfolds in the Normandy countryside, a group gathered in a clearing with the woods closing around them and a village far off in the haze. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 20th century, it is a wooded landscape worked in soft greens and golds inside a flower border, tall trees framing the scene on each side. A tapestry like this is called a verdure, from the French for greenery, woven to bring the woods and fields indoors, its whole subject the green of the countryside itself. Sylvie hangs it across a big bare wall, a window onto a wood that never changes.

Dear collector, this piece may show sun-faded color and a few loose threads It's all part of its age and character, just the way we like it. This tapestry image is printed on the fabric and it has a really nice burlap backing fabric. Some of the image has worn away with sun and age.
