French Stool

France, 20th Century

$255

Vintage One-Of-A-Kind Exactly As Pictured

Down at the hearth or out in the milking shed, a stool like this was always within reach, low to the ground and light enough to move with a foot. Found in Normandy and made in the 20th century, it has a rectangular seat with a softly rounded edge, set on four turned legs joined low by a turned stretcher and splayed for balance. The turning is the one bit of decoration the maker allowed himself, the same vase shape run down all four legs and along the stretcher to tie it together. Sylvie sets it by the fireplace with a cup of coffee cooling on the seat, close enough to reach from the armchair through a long winter afternoon.
