Rare Sculptors Stool

France, 19th Century

$1,895

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Historic

In a sculptor's studio, a stand like this held the work as it was made, raised to the level of the hands and the eye, turned this way and that as the clay or the stone took shape. Found in Le Mans and dating to the 19th century, it came out of a sculptor's studio just outside Paris, a tall stand on four splayed legs braced with triangular shelves, worn from years in the workroom. Studio furniture was made to be used hard and rarely kept once the work was done, so a sculptor's stand that survived, splashed and marked from its years of service, is a rare thing to come across. Sylvie stands it in a corner with a bust or a big vase of branches on top, tall enough to lift whatever it holds to eye level.
