Hearth Chair

France, 19th Century

$395

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Wood

Before central heating, this tall 19th-century hearth chair was the throne of the fire, built so mothers could sit close with their babies while tending the flames. Its elongated back and sturdy frame gave both comfort and a bit of stature in the dim glow of the hearth, when warmth was hard-won and evenings stretched long. Sylvie imagines it today as the perfect corner chair for a bedroom, pulled up beside a bookshelf in a snug corner.
