19th c. Still life Oil Artwork

France, 19th Century

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Artwork

Someone looked at the plainest things in a kitchen, a copper pot, an onion, a chipped plate, and thought them worth a whole painting. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 19th century, it gathers them out of the shadows in warm coppers and greens, a jug and a pot and a bowl catching what little light there is. The kitchen still life is one of painting's oldest and humblest subjects, the copper and earthenware of an ordinary day held still and made to glow the way the Dutch and French masters loved. Sylvie leans it on a kitchen shelf or a mantel, unframed and dark, a little depth on the wall behind the real pots.
