Antique Rare Sylvie Favorite One-Of-A-Kind

Before accounts lived on screens, they lived in big leather ledgers, written up by hand at a standing desk exactly like this one. Found in Lille and dating to the 19th century, it is tall, with a sloped lift-up lid over open shelves and six drawers with brass cup pulls, a small slide pulling out from the side to rest a book or a candle. It was a clerk's desk, the counting-house piece a bookkeeper worked at from morning to night, papers in the drawers and the sloped lid lifting to hide the rest. Sylvie keeps it against the wall in the dining room, its shelves and drawers stacked with plates, glasses, and folded linens.
