Rare French Vanity Mirror

France, 20th Century

$595

On the dressing table stood a mirror like this, for the small daily rituals, the last look before going out and the pins taken down at night. Found in Lille and dating to the 1920s, it is a standing mirror in a metal frame scrolled all over with rococo leaves and flowers, its bevelled glass tilting on a little easel back. The swirling frame is Rococo revived, the 1700s love of curves and blossoms brought back two centuries on, and the bevelled edge throws a thin band of light around the glass. Sylvie stands it on a dressing table or a bathroom shelf, propped where the morning light can find it.
