The bombé was the showpiece of the old cabinetmaker's trade, a chest swelled out on every side into a curve that could only be cut from solid wood, and only by the best hands. Found in Lille and dating to the 19th century, it is stripped, pale wood, three deep drawers bowing out over carved feet, hung with dark rococo pulls and matching keyplates. Long after the rest of Europe had gone back to straight lines, Dutch cabinetmakers kept cutting this bulging shape by hand, which is why a commode like this reads as Dutch across a room. Sylvie stands it under a big mirror in a bedroom, its drawers deep enough to swallow a whole season of sweaters.
