French Drapers Console Table

France, 20th Century

$2,995

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Sylvie Favorite

Drapers measured cloth by eye and by the length of the arm, unrolling a bolt across the counter and cutting off whatever a customer asked for, the rest of the shop's color stacked underneath. Found in Lille and dating to the 20th century, it is warm wood on turned legs, a flat top above two open tiers that step down to a base board near the floor. Lille built its fortune on cloth, one of the great textile cities of the north, so a merchant's table like this belongs to exactly the world it came from. Sylvie stands it against a wall as a console, a lamp and the day's post on top and the shelves below stacked with books and folded throws.
