Tapestry - Maison

A verdure tapestry was a way to bring the whole forest indoors, a green wood you could hang on the wall and live inside all winter. Found in Belgium and dating to the 20th century, it is a deep woodland scene, great trees leaning over a clearing where a single bird stands near the water, all held inside a wide border of leaves and flowers. Verdure comes from the French for greenery, and the weavers of Flanders made these for centuries, whole walls of leaves where the trees themselves are the subject and no figure is needed. Sylvie hangs it across a whole wall of the dining room, so that dinner happens at the edge of a forest.
