Triangle Rush Stool

Rush seats were woven by hand from the reeds that grew along the riverbanks, twisted into long cords and worked over the frame in a spiral, a country craft older than most of the furniture it sat on. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 20th century, it is a three-legged stool in dark turned wood, braced by double stretchers, its triangular seat woven in pale rush that draws to a point over each leg. Rush was almost always worked to a square or a round, so a seat pulled into three corners like this is an uncommon shape to come across. Sylvie sets it beside a low armchair as a little table for a book and a cup, the woven seat just the right height to reach down to.
