For a hundred years this cupboard kept a household's things behind its one tall door, the linens and the preserves and whatever was worth putting away, and the paint has worn down to the record of all that opening and closing. Found in Béziers and dating to the 18th century, it stands tall beneath a molded cornice, a single panelled door opening onto shelves and a small drawer fitted inside. A country cupboard like this was painted to protect the wood and painted again whenever it needed it, so the color it wears now is really years of layers worn back into one another. Sylvie would stand it in an entry or a bedroom, the inside drawer for the small things, and leave the paint exactly as the years left it.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The painted cabinet shows layers of wear from its long history, with scuffs, scratches, areas of raw wood, and traces of old paint or plaster throughout. The key operates the door lock and also serves as the handle. Inside are three shelves and a drawer, with some additional wear to the raw wood interior. The crown molding has slight movement on the right side but remains secure, and a small section of molding is missing from the lower right side. The cabinet body measures 31.5" x 16.75".
