19th c. English Sideboard
England, 19th Century
$4,995
After a century and a half, it still has its original keys. Found in Belgium but English in origin, this 19th-century dresser base runs long and low, a bank of drawers dressed in shaped brass over a softly scalloped apron. It stands on turned front legs joined by a potboard, the open plank shelf that runs along the floor. That potboard was the working heart of the piece, built low to take the heavy things, the big pots, crocks, and serving dishes left down near the floor, while the drawers above held the linen and the silver, the whole of it the pride of the English and Welsh country house. Sylvie would run it along a dining room wall as a sideboard, the drawers for linen and candles, big platters and a stack of baskets down on the potboard where they have always gone.

Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The glossy wood finish shows some small splits and wear throughout. All drawers open smoothly with unfinished interiors, and the locks include functional keys, though one metal lock plate needs to be reattached. A European electrical outlet is attached underneath the back. The dresser is sturdy, with all the little signs of a long and useful life.
