Ancient One-Of-A-Kind Sylvie Favorite Collectors Must Have

Whoever carved this chest was thinking of a church, running the same pointed arches you would find in a cathedral window straight across the front of a household coffer. Found in Belgium and dating to the 18th century, it sits low on a sledge base, a hinged plank lid above a front carved in a row of Gothic arches, the corners locked in hand-cut dovetails. That row of arches is Gothic tracery, the stonework language of the great cathedrals borrowed and cut down to the scale of a chest, a little architecture to guard the linens inside. Sylvie would set it at the foot of a bed or use it low as a coffee table, centuries of carving right there at knee height.

Notes from Sylvie:

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The trunk has a gleaming wood finish with layers of patina earned over its long history. The hook-and-nail style hinges function properly and show some rust patina, while small repairs and surface variation add to the character that only comes with time.
