French Louis XVI Marble Dresser

France, 19th Century

$2,495

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Sylvie Favorite

When French taste tired of curves and gilt, it turned to this, the calm straight lines and quiet symmetry of the Louis XVI style, elegance with nothing left to prove. Found in Aix-en-Provence, it curves out in a demilune beneath a cream marble top, three drawers deep with brass tassel pulls, a carved ribbon frieze across the top drawer and slim fluted legs beneath. Those tapered fluted legs are the signature of the period, cut like miniature classical columns, the whole piece built to the calm proportions the age admired. Sylvie would use it as a bedside chest or in an entry, the marble top for a lamp and a few flowers, its curve softening the corner it sits in.

Notes from Sylvie:

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The cabinet has been sanded back to raw wood and has a slight rack, though the doors open comfortably and the hinges are in good condition. The marble top has a warm yellowish tone, is in beautiful condition, and rests freely on the cabinet.
