18th c. Workshop Cupboard

France, 18th Century

$1,795

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Styling Essential

Someone in the 1700s wanted what was in here kept shut, and fitted the little door with both a hand-forged bolt and a lock to be sure of it. Found in Le Perche, it opens on a single plank door, battened across the back and hung on iron hinges, to a plain interior with one shelf inside. A workshop cupboard like this was built by the same hands that used it, cut and pegged and fitted with a bolt the local smith beat out by hand, no two ever quite alike. Sylvie would stand it in an entry for keys and gloves, or beside a bed as a cupboard that arrived with its story already inside.
