A refectory table was built to be gathered around, the shared board of a monastery or a farmhouse where the whole household came to the same table at the same hour. Found in Avignon and dating to the 20th century, it carries a thick plank top on two solid trestle piers, joined by a long central stretcher pegged straight through the ends. The form comes down from the monasteries, where meals were taken in the refectory in near silence at one shared board, the table built as soundly and honestly as everything else in the house. Sylvie would set it in a dining room with mismatched chairs down both sides and let it host the long, slow dinners it was always meant for.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
Notes from Sylvie:
Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The table has a beautiful gleaming finish, with gentle wear and visible splits between the three boards that make up the top. The trestle base is secured with traditional wooden wedges, and the table is extremely heavy and sturdy. The clearance from the underside of the tabletop to the floor is 26.75".
