19th c. Bedside Table

France, 19th Century

$655

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Hard To Find

A table de chevet took its name from the chevet, the head of the bed, for it lived its whole life within arm's reach of a sleeper. Made in the Louis XV manner, it carries a small drawer above an open shelf beneath a scalloped gallery, a heart cut into one side and the whole of it raised on slender cabriole legs. Those legs and the little pierced heart place it in provincial France, where even a plain bedside necessity was given a little beauty. Sylvie would stand it by a bed, the drawer for what you want out of sight and the shelf for the book you have not finished.
