French Torchère

France, 19th Century

$295

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Rare

A torchère exists to raise a little light, a lamp or a candelabra lifted into a corner the day never quite reaches. Found in Avignon and made in the 19th century, it rises on a single slim column from a round platform set on three curved legs, a small galleried top at its full height. Stands like this lit rooms before the lamp had a switch, and later held the ferns and potted palms every parlor wanted, the raised gallery keeping a pot or a lamp from wandering off the edge. Sylvie would top it with a lamp, a trailing plant, or a single candle, and let it light a corner all its own.

Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
