Vintage One-Of-A-Kind Rare

Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and dating to the 20th century, this shelf is two long planks held between two thick shaped end boards and little else, heavy and hand-cut and left rough off the saw. It stands low and long, the two ends joined at the floor by a single stretcher, worn and marked all over from years of use. A primitive piece like this could never be made new, its weight and its scars earned rather than added. Sylvie stands it behind a sofa or along a hall, the shelves for books, baskets, and framed things leaned against the wall.

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. Made from heavy, chunky hardwood with a semi-matte finish, the shelves show divots, knots, splits, staining, and surface variation throughout. There is some slight side-to-side movement. The bottom shelf sits at 6", the middle at 20", and the top at 37.25".
