French Pedestal Table

France, 20th Century

Vintage One-Of-A-Kind Styling Essential

Lift a single vase of flowers a few feet up into the light and a quiet corner comes alive, which is the whole purpose of a stand like this one. Found in Avignon and dating to the 20th century, it rises tall and slender, a small round top balanced on a boldly turned column above a round stepped base. The French call a tall stand like this a sellette, made not for sitting down to but for holding something worth looking at, a plant, a lamp, a piece of sculpture, up where the eye finds it. Sylvie would set it in a corner or beside a window with a trailing plant or a vase of tall stems spilling over the top.
