In the 1800s France fell in love with its own Renaissance all over again, and tables like this one came out carved to the hilt. Found in Avignon, it stands on turned baluster legs above a lower shelf, every edge gadrooned and leafed, the two tiers joined by a stretcher that rises to a little turned urn at its center. The look has a name, the Henri II style, France's 19th-century revival of its own Renaissance, when carvers looked back three hundred years to the walnut and the flourishes of the 1500s. Sylvie would set it beside a chair or in an entry, the lower tier for books and the top for a bits and bobs.
Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
