French Side Table

France, 19th Century

$425

Antique One-Of-A-Kind Styling Essential

The best side tables started life as something else, built sturdy for a farm and only later pulled indoors to sit beside a chair. Made in the early 20th century, it sets a rectangular plank top cut with an oval handhold at its center on four turned legs braced low by a shaped stretcher. That slot through the top is a handhold, cut so it could be caught up in one hand and carried wherever it was needed, which makes the little table just as easy to move now. Sylvie would set it beside a sofa or an armchair with a lamp and a book, or keep it as a low perch by the fire.
