Antique Artwork Exactly As Pictured

Out of a dark ground the day's gathering emerges, a halved melon still bright at its center, apples and a pear and plums heaped behind, a game bird laid across the stone where the hunt left it. Found in Béziers and dating to the 19th century, it hangs in a worn giltwood frame, painted in the deep shadows and low warm light of the old masters. The French call this a nature morte, a still life, and a table of ripe fruit and fresh game like this was painted to stand for abundance, the reward of a good season set out to be admired. Sylvie would hang it low over a sideboard or lean it on a mantel, a dark, quiet painting that makes a whole room feel older and richer.
