Carved Alps Chair

The front hall was the first room a guest ever saw, and a chair set there was meant for the briefest of waits, the coat handed off and the calling card carried in before anyone sat for long. Found in Avignon, and originally from the French Alps, these hall chairs carry a tall carved back pierced at its center, a shaped solid seat, and four barley-twist legs spiralling to the floor. A hall chair was always left as bare carved wood without a scrap of upholstery, because no one was meant to linger in it, and a pierced and carved back like this one often once framed a family crest.
