Antique Pedestal Table

Some small tables are content to be useful, and others, like this one, decide to be beautiful about it. Found in Avignon and dating to the late 19th century, it balances an oval top on a turned column that opens at the foot into three deeply scrolled legs. The base is carved into a run of C-scrolls, the curling forms the old Baroque cabinetmakers loved, giving a small table the drama of a much larger piece. Sylvie would stand it in an entry with a lamp and a bowl for keys, or beside a sofa where the base can be seen.
