A chest carved with a coat of arms was never only for storage, it was a small statement, a family's mark set where every visitor would see it. Found in Avignon and dating to the 19th century, it carries a central shield of three fleur-de-lis flanked by carved laurel, its corners locked in deep dovetails and the whole raised on a molded base and round bun feet. Three fleur-de-lis on a shield are the old royal arms of France, borne by her kings from 1376 until 1804 and long said to stand for the Holy Trinity, so this chest wears a piece of the monarchy across its front. Sylvie would set it at the foot of a bed or under a window, a low table with a little of France's history carved into it.

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The wood has been sanded back to a raw finish and shows small nicks, impressions, and imperfections, with additional wear along the bottom trim. The interior is fabric lined, and the hinges function properly with minor rust patina.
