Provencal Rush Bench

You sit down for a minute and stay for the afternoon. Found in Montpellier and dating to the early 20th century, it carries three scalloped ladder rails across the back, a wide hand-woven rush seat, and a frame of turned posts and stretchers worn smooth with use. The rush-seated ladderback is one of the oldest country seats in France, turned and woven by hand the same way for generations, and the bench version seated several people at once along a farmhouse table or against a kitchen wall. Sylvie would run it down one side of the table in place of chairs, or set it in an entry to pull boots off and drop a bag.
