Found in Avignon, this 19th-century French oak chair is known fondly as a chaise lorraine. Chairs like this were made across northern and eastern France through the 1800s, built in oak for everyday use at the family table and along the kitchen wall, the kind of chair every household owned several of. The pegged joinery and worn turnings are from generations of being pulled in and pushed back. Sylvie pulls it up to a writing desk with a stack of letters and a lamp.
