Found in Avignon but originally from central France, this 19th century monastery chair would have been used in monastic living quarters or refectories where furniture was built to be sturdy, simple, and made to last for generations. Monastery furnishings were typically handcrafted from oak or other local woods and designed with strong stretchers and solid seats to withstand constant daily use by the community. Sylvie loves it pulled up beside a writing desk or placed at the end of a hallway table.
