Found in the Netherlands, this 19th-century cupboard is one piece, with open shelves above and a paneled door cabinet below. Between the two sections is a decorative band carved with a pattern of interlocking rings, the most distinctive feature of the piece. The hinges on the lower doors are hand-forged iron, and the small wooden pulls have the wear of use. The wood is dark and weathered, with the surface of a piece that has been touched, scrubbed, and lived with for over a hundred years. Sylvie places it in a kitchen with stacked ceramic plates on the upper shelves, where the carved ring band catches the morning light.
