Found in the Netherlands, this 19th-century Dutch coffee table was built from solid pine with a single drawer down the centre and a small iron pull worn smooth by use. Coffee tables didn't exist yet when this was made; it started life as a low farmhouse work table, the kind a family sat around to mend, sort, and eat. The pine has gone the colour of warm honey from a century and a half of light. Sylvie sets it in front of a low sofa with a stack of books, a pot of something green, and a candle burning down through the afternoon.
