Found in Avignon, this 19th-century Spanish side table is in the country tradition of provincial Spain, with the splayed legs and side stretchers that have run through Spanish farmhouse furniture for centuries. The drawer is small and shallow, finished with a turned wooden knob and a scalloped apron carved into the rail below. The stretchers gave the table its footing on uneven stone floors. The wood has darkened to a deep warm tone after a hundred and fifty years of being lived with. Sylvie places it next to a deep armchair with a small lamp on top and the drawer holding what gathers there over the course of a week.
