The good books, the good dishes, the things a household wanted seen but never handled all lived behind glass in a cabinet like this one. It dates to the early 20th century and came out of a home near Barjac, a tall glass-fronted top set over a paneled base and made in two parts. A glazed bookcase like this was a quiet kind of status in a French home, a way of showing the household read and kept a library worth showing off, the same pride others took in their silver. Sylvie fills it with books and keeps the doors shut, the whole library of them guarded behind glass.
