Discovered in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this 1950s coffee table is a low on three solid legs, which we stripped back to the bare wood - just the way we like it. It came to us under a coat of dark varnish, and taking that off let the grain come through, pale and open with the figure of the wood right there on the surface. The low coffee table is a fairly modern idea, born in the 20th century when sitting rooms loosened up and people gathered low around a sofa instead of upright at a table. Sylvie sets it in the middle of a room with a stack of art books, a bowl, and a few stems in something small.
