Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this mid-century French cup and saucer is glazed in the same soft apple green and deep brown as the little milk jug, a set from the same Provençal kitchen. The wide shallow bowl of the cup is the classic French café au lait shape, made for the morning coffee you drink with both hands while the day starts. The green has worn through to the clay in spots where decades of fingers found the same place to hold it. Sylvie sets it out for the first coffee of the day, a slice of bread and jam on a small plate beside it.
