Every French garden once had a basket like this one, carried out at dawn and filled with whatever the morning gave up, grapes and apples and cut flowers still wet with dew. Found in Carpentras, it was woven by hand from willow in the early 20th century, a low oval with a bent branch set across the middle for a handle. Basket-making was its own village trade then, and a harvest basket was built wide and shallow so nothing at the bottom would bruise under what was piled on above it. Sylvie keeps it by the kitchen door for the same reason it was made, carrying it out to the garden empty and bringing it back full.
