Found in Béziers and from a historic masia near Besalú, this 19th-century Spanish console is the rare piece in a farmhouse otherwise full of plain, working furniture. Where a masia mostly held things built to be used hard, a console like this was made only to be looked at, set against the best wall of the main room to hold whatever the family wanted seen, a vase, a lamp, the good dishes laid out for company. The curved legs and the serpentine top borrow the grand style of the city and the great house, brought into a Catalan farmhouse by a maker reaching well past the everyday. Sylvie sets it in an entry or behind a sofa, the long line of it doing most of the work on its own.
