Long before the first electric bulb was screwed into a French ceiling, a chateau in Normandy lit its great halls with iron candelabra like this one - tall as a person, standing on their own four scrolling feet, the candle set high above the company so the light fell over the whole room. Hand-forged in the 18th century, the stem rises in a single iron rod with a heart of curling iron scrolls set at the center, blackened by three hundred years of soot and softened into the warm patina that only iron of this age can hold. The base scrolls outward in four matching curls, the iron dish at the top wide enough for the great pillar candle it was made to carry. Sylvie sets it in the corner of a dining room with a fresh pillar candle, lit at dusk and burned down through the evening, the room arranging itself around the light the way it always has.
