Found in Béziers, this 19th-century French desk is a small writing table, the kind a house kept by a window for the light. Before anyone had a study, the family's letters and accounts got done at a table like this, the single drawer holding the pen, the ink, and whatever still needed answering. The carpenter shaped the apron into soft curves and left the legs plain and square, the one bit of decoration on a table built to be worked at. Sylvie uses it as a desk by a window, or in an entry with a lamp and the day's post waiting in the drawer.
