Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this late-19th-century French side table is a small oak piece with a single carved drawer and turned legs. Tables this size were the odd-job furniture of a French house, pulled up beside a chair or a bed to hold a lamp, a glass, or a book, the drawer there for whatever small things needed a home. Sylvie sets it beside a bed with a small lamp and a stack of books, the drawer holding the things you reach for last thing at night.
