19th c. Normandie Desk

In a 19th-century Normandy house, a small desk like this sat under a window where someone wrote letters in the afternoon, the paper held down by whatever was at hand and the light coming in over the shoulder. Found in Béziers but Norman by birth, this 19th-century French desk is built in pale oak with a wide rectangular top, two carved trestle ends, and a thick stretcher running through them at the floor. Norman cabinetmakers were known across France for their oak, the wood cut from the forests of the region and worked into furniture that would outlast the rooms it was made for; the trestle base on this one is the local signature, a small village of carving compressed into the silhouette of each end.
