Antique One-Of-A-Kind Upholstery

Found in Avignon, this Napoleon III armchair is the small fringed crapaud the Second Empire built its salons around - a low rounded back, scrolled arms tucked close to the seat, and a deep skirt of bullion fringe brushing the floor. Good furniture in the 1860s had no visible legs, the whole frame buried in upholstery so the chair seemed to grow up out of the room itself. The velvet has worn to a deep mossy green, the fringe still hanging full and heavy from a century and a half ago. Sylvie sets it in a corner of a bedroom with a small table beside it, a lamp, and a book the kind of person who sits in this chair has been meaning to finish.
