Found in Montpellier but Spanish by origin, this late-19th-century side table has the look of something made at home, its plank top worn smooth and dark from a long working life. It stood against a farmhouse wall and did a little of everything, splayed legs to keep it steady, a drawer for the small things that go missing, and a stretcher the carpenter couldn't resist shaping into soft scallops, one flourish on a table that was otherwise all business. Sylvie sets it by a bed or behind a sofa with a stack of books and a small lamp.
